Contemporary art from Portugal and throughout the world can be found in this museum, which also has pieces by Rodin, Abel Manta, Adriano Sousa Lopes, and other masters. The National Museum of Contemporary Art of Chiado has been in the Convent of São Francisco da Cidade since 1911. This set of buildings suffered serious damage in the 1755 earthquake, and after a fire in 1988, the museum reopened in 1994. The museum was created by splitting the former National Museum of Fine Arts into two. The National Museum of Ancient Art received works made until 1850. The National Museum of Contemporary Art hosts works from after 1850 and is now situated in the Convent of São Francisco. You will find exhibitions featuring paintings, sculptures, and drawings from 1850 to 1975. You’ll see works by notable artists from the 19th century, including romanticism to symbolism, and from the 20th century, covering modernism and conceptual art.
