A rental car is highly recommended as public transportation is limited. Roads are generally well-maintained, but some areas like Wailua Canyon have narrow, winding roads. Allow extra time for driving.

Access is via hiking the Kalalau Trail, boat tours, or helicopter tours. Hiking requires permits and proper footwear. Ocean conditions are rough in winter, making water tours safer in summer months.
