At the end of Turnagain Arm, the tracks veer away from the road system into the backcountry wilderness – and what many consider to be the most scenic stretch of the Alaska Railroad, accessible only by train. Watch for views of massive glaciers, steep river canyons, and cascading waterfalls. The train arrives to Seward at 1115 am, allowing plenty of time to explore this charming port town – or opt to take a marine wildlife & glacier day cruise into the nearby Kenai Fjords – before departing on the return journey at 6 pm that evening, arriving back to Anchorage by 10:15 pm.

Mornings at Spencer Glacier are the most serene & consistently magnificent time to paddle. Kayak around icebergs and up close to the Spencer Glacier terminus face. Hike onto the glacier moraine and get up close to the blue wall of ice. How to get to Denali National Park? There’s no finer way to arrive than aboard Alaska Railroad’s flagship train, the Denali Star. Passengers especially appreciate the panoramic views, as on a clear day the route offers incredible views of the train’s namesake peak: Denali, the tallest mountain in North America. We recommend that passengers made advance reservations for accommodations at the Park, as it is not possible to get to and from Denali from Anchorage by rail in the same day. A return rail journey from Denali to Anchorage may be booked separately for a subsequent day. 

Our tour runs on an asphalt bike path through the Chugach State Park with views of the Turnagain Arm and its 6,000 foot tall mountains. The area is known for its 40-foot tide changes and Tidal Bore waves that are unique to this area of Alaska, and are not commonly found elsewhere throughout the world. We follow the same path as the Alaska Railroad through avalanche runout zones up to Bird Point, where we are able to cross underneath the highway for a chance to see beluga whales when the tide is right. Afterwards we climb up a hill for more of a birds eye view of the water and quiet mountainside surroundings. Approaching Girdwood, we descend the hill and go through the Ghost Forest, so named for the trees that died in the 1964 earthquake.
