Yes, private experiences are the dominant format here. Roughly 83% of the listings we track are private tours, meaning you will likely have your own guide and vehicle rather than joining a large group. This high share of private options makes it easier to tailor the pace and itinerary to your specific interests.

You should plan for a full day. The median duration for these tours is around 10 hours, with most options ranging between 9 and 10.5 hours. This accounts for the travel time required to reach the grottoes from Lanzhou and the time needed to explore the site by boat.

The options we compare are available in five languages: English, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Reviewers frequently highlight that guides are fluent and knowledgeable, which adds significant value when navigating the historical and cultural context of the site.

Reaching the site involves a combination of road and water travel. About two-thirds of the tours include both a private vehicle transfer and a boat ride to access the temples directly. This dual-transport setup is standard because the grottoes are located along the Yellow River and are best viewed from the water.

Booking ahead is highly recommended. Most of the tours we compare offer instant confirmation (roughly 83%), but given the 10-hour duration and limited daily slots at the site, popular times fill up quickly. Additionally, about 67% of options allow free cancellation, giving you flexibility to secure your preferred date early.

A guided experience is the most common inclusion, appearing in roughly two-thirds of the tours. Other frequent inclusions are entrance fees, hotel pickup and drop-off, and meals, each present in about half of the options. Since many tours are private, you also get a dedicated vehicle and guide, which helps keep the experience personalized throughout the day.
