The history of Mont-Saint Michel
The Mont-Saint-Michel might be the most famous place in Normandy. The name came after the archangel Michel appeared to Saint- Aubert in 708 on this rocky island. For this reason, monks and pilgrims from different cities decided to build a basilica to honor the archangel.
The Mon-Saint-Michel survived the 100 years’ war with England, from 1337 to 1453. After the French revolution, monks left the church, and the place was used as a jail. Because of tides and quicksand, prisoners could not escape.
In 1863, the prison closed, and the Historical Monument Service restored the monument. After that, in 1979, this Service opened the Mont-Saint-Michel as a public place.
Currently, Mont-Saint-Michel had a friendship relation with Miyajima Island (Japan) and Monte Sant’Angelo (Italy).
