Midsummer’s Eve

Midsummer's Eve
Swedish people celebrate Midsummer’s Eve with traditional food.
  • Date: June 20, 2025
  • Where Is It Happening: Sweden, Worldwide

If you travel to Sweden this June, you wouldn’t want to miss out on Midsummer’s Eve and Midsummer Day. Unlike other countries, Sweden celebrates these days a little earlier, with the 2025 dates falling on June 20 (Midsummer’s Eve) and June 21 (Midsummer Day). The eve is a significant cultural and religious holiday with bonfires, singing, feasting, and maypole dancing. It also involves traditional foods like new potatoes, pickled herring, and spiced schnapps. Each activity done on these days symbolizes a specific matter, such as bonfires, which are lit to ward off evil spirits. On the eve, people gather to create a large maypole decorated with wildflowers and participate in ring dances and traditional dances. Some even enjoy skinny dipping at night.

Many confuse Midsummer Day with the Summer Solstice. Although both events occur in June, they are totally different. The Summer Solstice marks the longest day of the year, while Midsummer Day marks the midpoint of the summer season.

June holds one of the highly talked about Chinese festivals, the Dragon Boat Festival. It annually occurs on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. It is a traditional Chinese holiday commemorating the romantic poet and beloved prime minister of the Chu state, Qu Yuan. The hero celebrated during the festival varies by region, with South China honoring Wu Zixu and Yunnan Province commemorating Yan Hongwo. If you are new to this fest, here is how you celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival:

  • Eating Sticky Rice Dumplings: Try Zongzi (glutinous rice filled with meats, beans, and other fillings and wrapped in rectangular or triangular shapes), which commemorates how lumps of rice were thrown into the Miluo River to stop fish from eating Qu Yuan’s body after he drowned himself.
  • Drinking Realgar Wine: Try this Chinese alcoholic drink, which is believed to drive diseases and evil spirits away.
  • Participating in Dragon Boat Races: Participate in or attend Dragon boat races, which symbolize how old folks sought out Qu Yuan’s body on boats.
  • Hanging Chinese Mugwort and Calamus: These plants are believed to ward off diseases and bring good luck to the family.
  • Wearing Perfume Pouches: Hang these small perfume pouches around children’s necks to protect them from evil.
  • Dragon Boat Festival Rituals: Bath in flower-scented water and wear five-color silk.
