Vietnam Public Holidays
The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Vietnam (MOLISA) manages the official public holidays of Vietnam. If there is a public holiday on either Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is considered a paid holiday. In short, there is a list of each holiday date in 2021 and the meaning of the day in Vietnam. New Year’s Day – Jan 1 (Sat), Substitute Holiday – Jan 3 (Mon), 2022
The 1st of January marks New Year’s Day where people gather to celebrate the new beginnings that the New Year brings with it. So, people celebrate New Year’s Day nationwide, and people plan special outings. During the holiday, the streets are decorated with street lights and food. And people can enjoy the magnificent fireworks. Streets serve other special treats on this special occasion.
Lunar New Year’s Day, Tet Holidays – Jan 31 to Feb 5, 2022
Tet Holiday lasts for seven to nine days, starting from the 31 st of January to the 5th of February. Including weekends, people will enjoy 9-day holidays this year. Tet Nguyen Dan, also known as Tet, is considered the most popular and most significant festival of the year in Vietnam. It is the first day of the first month in the Lunar Calendar. In 2022, Tet Eve will commence on Monday, 31 st of January.
Vietnamese people decorate their homes with colorful flowers and trees. At this time, they meet relatives, make traditional food, hold rituals, and enjoy the holidays. It is also a day that has the meaning of celebrating the New Year and announcing the beginning of spring.
Hung Kings’ Festival – Apr 10 (Sun), 2022
The Hùng Kings’ Temple Festival is celebrated every year from the 8th to the 11th day of the third lunar month to commemorate the memory of the Hùng Vương, also called as Hùng Kings. Hung Kings were the traditional founders of the Vietnamese nation. The major festival day in their name, which is also a public holiday in Vietnam since 2007, is celebrated on the 10th day of the third lunar month. In 2022, Hung Kings’ festival will start on Saturday.
Liberation / Reunification Day – Apr 30 (Sat), Substitute Holiday – May 2 (Mon), 2022
The liberation Day, also known as Reunification Day, or Victory Day, marks an official public holiday in Vietnam and is celebrated on the 30th of April. This holiday denoted the event when Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops caught Saigon on the 30th of April, 1975. In 2022, Liberation Day is on Sunday, and Reunification Day falls on Monday. May 2
International Labor Day – May 1 (Mon), 2022
International Labor Day is an official public holiday that is celebrated on the 1st of May every year. Businesses and schools remain closed, and people celebrate this day to honor the labor force of the world. But tourism industries operate normally. In 2022, International Labor Day will fall on Sunday, so May 3 is the substitute holiday.
National Day, Independence Day of Vietnam – Sep 2 to 3 (Fri-Sat), 2022
Vietnamese celebrate National Day annually on the 2nd of September. National Day marks a public holiday in Vietnam that also commemorates President Hồ Chí Minh reading the Declarations of independence of Vietnam at Ba Đình Square in Hanoi from France on the 2nd of September 1945. People celebrate this day enthusiastically with celebrations on a national level. In 2022, National Day will fall on Friday. From 2021, it has been announced that the Independence Day Holiday will be extended from one day to two days. Unfortunately, September 3rd is Saturday this year.
